WinkBed Plus Mattress Review

WinkBeds launched in 2015 and produces multiple mattress options, including the WinkBed, the MemoryLux, and the EcoCloud. The WinkBed is a hybrid, the MemoryLux is foam, and the EcoCloud is a latex hybrid.

The WinkBed Plus is closely related to the hybrid WinkBed mattress. They share some similarities in construction, including a Tencel cover and an innerspring base. However, the WinkBed Plus is uniquely designed to accommodate sleepers who weigh more than average. As such, it features slightly different features than the original WinkBed, including a latex layer.

Since sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may sink in too deeply on some mattresses, the extra support provided by the WinkBed Plus mattress may be beneficial. Few mattresses are specifically designed for this weight group in mind, so the WinkBed Plus is unique.

In this guide, we’ll share more information on the WinkBed Plus mattress and who it might be best for.

WinkBed Plus Mattress Overview

WinkBed Plus Mattress

WinkBed Plus

Designed specifically for people over 230 pounds, the WinkBed Plus offers support and durability.

Like the WinkBed, the WinkBed Plus uses a hybrid design, is 13.5 inches tall, and is constructed of three main layers.

The WinkBed Plus also shares many of the same innovations used in the original WinkBed mattress, including the 3-Step Back Relief System, the LumbarLayer, Triple Layer Heat-Disperse Material, the extraEDGE Support System, and SleepCalm Motion Isolation. Each of these technologies offers distinct benefits. The 3-Step Back Relief System aims to relieve pressure points and provide support. The LumbarLayer aims to promote spinal alignment. Triple Layer Heat-Disperse Material aims to provide cooling. The extraEDGE Support System offers reinforced edges to make the perimeter of the bed feel sturdier. Finally, SleepCalm Motion Isolation aims to reduce motion transfer and associated sleep disturbances.

While the WinkBed Plus shares the innovations of the WinkBed mattress, the internal components vary.

The top layer of the WinkBed Plus is composed of high-density foam, designed to provide cushioning without sagging.

The next layer of the WinkBed Plus is constructed of 2.5 inches of latex. The open-cell latex provides conforming, but due to its unique cell structure, it can also wick heat away rather than trapping it near the body. The latex layer is zoned with 7 different areas for targeted support.

The base layer uses an innovative 3-Zone TexasQUAD system. Coils are individually wrapped, but every four coils are banded together. Individually wrapping each coil can reduce motion transfer in the innerspring layer, while banding every four coils together can add support.

The mattress cover is composed of Tencel, which is derived from eucalyptus. This fabric can offer softness and cooling.

The WinkBed Plus mattress comes in just one firmness option. On the conventional 10-point firmness scale, the WinkBed Plus would rank around 8, so it could be considered extra firm. However, the mattress is designed to accommodate sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds. To this group, the firmness may feel more like 6.5, which would make it a medium-firm mattress.

WinkBed Plus Mattress Breakdown

When selecting a mattress, there are countless factors to consider. Below, we’ll discuss some of the most important factors. You might also be interested in reading our methodology to learn more about the following categories.

Is it made from quality materials?

The WinkBed Plus mattress is constructed of high-quality materials designed to resist breaking down over time. The top two layers of the mattress use high-density foam and latex, both of which are high-quality materials. The foam layer is designed to resist sagging. The latex has an open-cell structure for greater breathability. Additionally, the innerspring layer uses durable coils, and these coils are pocketed to help reduce motion transfer.

The foam used in the WinkBed Plus mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, so it has been tested for substances like mercury, lead, and formaldehyde.

How long will it last?

The WinkBed Plus is designed to withstand regular use by individuals who weigh over 300 pounds. It features high-quality, durable materials. Plus, WinkBeds has a DuraTech Lifetime Durability standard and tests its mattresses’ durability using an independent lab. Hybrid mattresses usually have a lifespan of 6-8 years, but we would expect the WinkBed Plus’s lifespan to be at least that long. The WinkBed Plus mattress also has a lifetime warranty, giving purchasers extra assurance of the mattress’s longevity.

How well does it conform to my body?

The WinkBed Plus mattress offers multiple layers that can conform to the body. Both foam and latex can adjust to pressure to relieve pressure points. The innerspring layer can also provide additional conforming. However, since the WinkBed Plus mattress is designed for sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds, the level of conforming you experience will be determined largely by your weight.

Is the edge supportive?

The WinkBed Plus mattress uses Winkbeds’ extraEDGE Support System. In this design, the perimeter of the innerspring layer features narrower coils, which provide a more supportive feel around the edge of the bed. The innerspring layer is also encased in high-density polyfoam for extra edge support. The extra support around the edge of the WinkBed Plus mattress can make it easier to sit or sleep close to the edge without it feeling like the mattress is sinking out from under you.

Does it sleep hot?

The WinkBed Plus mattress should not retain heat excessively. The Tencel cover has cooling properties, the latex layer is naturally breathable, and the innerspring layer should allow air to circulate well. All of these features can help promote a cooler night’s sleep.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

As is common with mattresses, the WinkBed Plus mattress may have a slight odor at first. The odor is not harmful, and it should air out quickly. If the smell bothers you, just leave the mattress in a well-ventilated area. Any smell should dissipate within a few hours to a few days.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The WinkBed Plus mattress can isolate a good deal of motion. Both foam and latex absorb motion, so it shouldn’t be felt across the surface of the bed. The innerspring layer has some bounce, which could lead to some motion transfer. However, minimal motion should be transferred across the innerspring layer because the coils are pocketed. While you shouldn’t expect total motion isolation like you may experience with some all-foam mattresses, the WinkBed Plus should be able to help prevent some nighttime disturbances.

Who is Best Suited for a WinkBed Plus Mattress?

Not all mattresses are ideal for all sleepers. The WinkBed Plus mattress targets a very specific group of sleepers, so that group is likely to find the WinkBed Plus most appealing.

The WinkBed Plus is designed with sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds in mind,so it will be most comfortable for heavier sleepers. Since most mattresses are not designed for sleepers in this weight group, the WinkBed Plus is an excellent option designed specifically for their needs. Sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds may struggle to find a supportive enough mattress that prevents excessive sinking. The WinkBed Plus mattress is firmer than most other mattresses on the market, providing the necessary support. While the Plus mattress generally rates around an 8 on the firmness scale, it may feel more like a 6.5 to sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds. The firmness of the mattress makes it well adapted for sleepers over 300 pounds, but the firmness may be too great for lighter weight sleepers, especially those under 130 pounds.

The WinkBed Plus mattress may also be appealing to couples. The foam and latex can help prevent motion transfer caused by one partner changing position during the night. However, the latex and innerspring layers can also offer enough bounce for sexual activity.

The WinkBed Plus mattress offers features that can promote a more comfortable night’s sleep for back, side, and stomach sleepers. Targeted support can help prevent excessive sinking and promote better alignment for any sleep position. Additionally, the top layer of foam is designed to resist sagging, which could provide a more even surface for back sleepers.

WinkBed Plus vs. Original WinkBed

The WinkBed and WinkBed Plus are designed for two different groups of sleepers. While the WinkBed is designed to accommodate most weight groups, the WinkBed Plus is specially designed for sleepers who weigh over 300 pounds. Members of any weight group may find either option comfortable, but lighter weight individuals may gravitate more towards the WinkBed and heavier individuals may prefer the WinkBed Plus.

The most notable difference in construction between the two beds is the layer of latex in the WinkBed Plus. While the WinkBed uses a layer of microcoils, the WinkBed Plus uses latex instead. Latex is exceptionally durable, so it may hold up better over time. Plus, latex regains its shape quickly. Like the microcoil layer in the WinkBed, the latex layer in the WinkBed Plus is zoned to provide targeted support.

Additionally, the top layer of foam in the WinkBed Plus is designed to resist impressions and sagging. The innerspring layer is also slightly different between the WinkBed and the WinkBed Plus. Unlike the WinkBed, the coils in the WinkBed Plus are bound in groups of four for extra support.
