Casper Hybrid Mattress Review

Despite launching in 2014, Casper has already become a leader in the “bed in a box” industry. The Casper Hybrid combines the memory foam of the original Casper Mattress with hundreds of individually wrapped coils to provide a more supportive and bouncier sleep surface. The Hybrid maintains the Casper’s zoned construction, ensuring that it’s supportive where you want it to be, and softer in other areas. Although rated as a “medium firm” mattress, it is softer than most other hybrid mattress models, and ideal for side and back sleepers. The Casper Hybrid is a great choice if you tend to sleep hot, as it supports better air circulation than all-foam models. The cost is slightly higher than some other hybrid mattress models, but Casper Sleep offers free delivery and a risk-free 100-night sleep trial. Want to learn more? Read on for more insight into the Casper Hybrid and whether it’s the right choice for you.

Casper Hybrid Mattress Overview

Casper Hybrid

Casper Hybrid

The soft conforming of the original Casper plus the support of coils.

The Casper Hybrid mattress is 12 inches tall, constructed of four layers of premium foam and pocketed coils. The base is 7 inches thick, with a high density foam base topped with individually pocketed, fabric covered coils. The top layer of foam is 1.5 inches of breathable comfort foam, designed with open cells to allow airflow and maximum coolness. The next two layers are 1.5 inches of memory foam, designed to relieve pressure, followed by a layer of zoned support transitional foam. This zoned foam is softer under the shoulders to provide pressure relief, and firmer under the hips for more support. This zoned approach to support means that the mattress will feel firmer when you’re sleeping on your back, and softer when you’re on your side.

The Casper Hybrid also offers enhanced edge support, making it easier to get in and out of bed. The cover is a breathable polyester blend, and feels soft and stretchy to the touch. By adding coils to the memory foam, you get the best of both worlds: Plenty of contouring and support without sinking too deeply, and plenty of responsive bounce.

The Casper Hybrid’s coils are constructed from a very durable material that resists sagging, improving the overall longevity of the mattress. The coils also allow for increased airflow, contributing to the Casper Hybrid’s ability to sleep cooler than other memory foam mattresses.

The Casper Hybrid is rated 5.5, or medium firmness, on a firmness scale of 1-10. However, it is slightly softer than some other mattresses rated at a similar firmness level. Casper mattresses are designed with a zone construction in the middle foam layer; it has firmer foam in the center of the mattress to support the lower back and hips, and a softer foam at the head and foot of the bed.

The Casper Hybrid is available in six sizes, listed below. Note that the prices are before any sales or discounts.

Casper Hybrid Mattress Breakdown

Below, learn more about some of the specific aspects of the Casper Hybrid, including its construction, comfort, and durability. For more on our mattress review process, check out our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

The Casper Hybrid is made from high quality materials, in particular the coils. The hundreds of individually wrapped springs are made from durable steel, providing excellent durability and and responsive bounce. The mattress includes several different types of foam, including breathable open-cell foam, which contributes to the mattress’ ability to sleep cool. The mattress also includes high-density memory foam and support foam. All of Casper’s foams are Certi-PUR US certified, meaning its made without harmful chemicals or toxins..

How long will it last?

In general, the Casper Hybrid is comparable to other memory foam hybrids, with a lifespan of 6-7 years.

How well does it conform to my body?

In terms of contouring, the Casper Hybrid’s combination of foam and coils provides a supportive sleeping surface without sacrificing too much. This means that it provides plenty of pressure relief without making you feel as if you’re “stuck” in the bed. The mattress’s body conforming abilities are overall consistent, without any areas of significant sinkage or pressure, regardless of position. That being said, stomach sleepers are likely to find that the mattress doesn’t properly align your spine, causing discomfort in the lower back.

Is the edge supportive?

The Casper Hybrid is constructed with extra edge support, creating a firmer edge that allows you to get in and out of bed more easily. The firmer edge also helps prevent sagging along the edges of the bed, such as that caused by sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Does it sleep hot?

The Casper Hybrid sleeps cooler than most memory foam mattresses. Not only does the open cell memory foam used for the top comfort layer allow for more airflow to maintain a cooler temperature, the coils encourage increased airflow.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

As with most memory-foam hybrid mattresses, the Casper Hybrid does have some off-gassing and odors when it’s first delivered. However, these odors are not long-lasting, and typically dissipate entirely within a few days.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The Casper Hybrid offers excellent motion isolation. You are unlikely to feel too much motion when you or your partner rolls over or gets out of bed. The mattress’s coils do provide some bounce, but much of that movement is absorbed by the memory foam layers,  That makes the bed an excellent choice for couples, especially when one or both tends to be an active sleeper.

Who is Best Suited for a Casper Hybrid Mattress?

Mattress comfort is subjective, and everyone has their own experience on a specific mattress. That being said, because overall comfort and spinal support are the key factors in selecting a mattress, you should consider factors such as your body weight/type, preferred sleeping position, and how you typically sleep when considering a new mattress.

Because the Casper Hybrid tends to be on the softer side of medium firmness, it’s best suited for side and back sleepers with a smaller or average body weight (up to 230 pounds). Heavier individuals (over 230 pounds), especially stomach sleepers, will likely find that the Casper Hybrid is not supportive enough, and that it sinks and sags too much for comfort.

For those who sleep with a partner, the Casper Hybrid is a good choice, as it practically eliminates motion transfer, meaning that you aren’t likely to feel any motion at all when your partner moves or gets out of bed. And despite having coil springs, the Casper Hybrid is virtually silent, so you won’t be awakened by a noisy mattress. The hybrid construction also helps make this mattress good for couples, as the coils provide more bounce and responsiveness than all-foam mattresses and make it better for sex than most all-foam mattresses.

Casper Hybrid vs. Original Casper

The primary difference between the Casper Hybrid and the Original Casper is the addition of coils in place of the support foam layer. This makes the mattress more supportive, especially when combined with the Casper’s zoned support construction. The Casper Hybrid is also bouncier and more supportive than the Original Casper, making it easier to move around and better for sex than most traditional memory foam mattresses. The Casper Hybrid was also designed with additional edge support, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed, and reduces the amount of sagging on the edges of the bed, a common issue with memory foam mattress. Like the traditional Casper, the Casper Hybrid is well-suited to side sleepers (especially smaller or lighter individuals) and back sleepers, but may not provide enough support for stomach sleepers.

Pricewise, the Casper Hybrid is slightly more expensive than the Casper. It also weighs more; the Casper Hybrid weighs 106 pounds, while the Casper weighs only 71 pounds.
